How overtime pay is calculated

Overtime pay is your basic hourly rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier and overtime hours. For time-and-a-half use 1.5; for double time use 2.

Is overtime taxed more?

There is no separate overtime tax. Overtime increases your employment income, so the extra pay is taxed at the marginal rates that apply to you. It can push part of your earnings into a higher band.

The estimate spreads annual earnings evenly over 12 months for National Insurance. Irregular overtime paid in particular months can therefore produce a different payslip deduction.

These are estimates for one employment using 2026/27 rules. For tax codes, student loans, different UK regions and other deductions, use the full take-home pay calculator. Read how we calculate your pay for the rates, assumptions and limits.
