About Pay Unpacked
Understand the pay behind the number
Pay Unpacked is an independent UK salary and take-home-pay tool, built to make the difference between your headline salary and what reaches your bank account easier to understand.
Why I built Pay Unpacked
I built Pay Unpacked because understanding pay should not require learning all the jargon around PAYE. A salary offer, a bonus or a change in working hours is easier to assess when you can see what the deductions mean for you.
The aim is to help people understand what they actually take home from a salary, bonus or hourly rate, and how pension contributions, student loans and other supported deductions affect that amount.
More than a final number
Pay Unpacked separates Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and loan repayments, and shows the assumptions behind the result. You can change the inputs to explore a different salary, tax code or pension method without creating an account.
The calculation methodology explains the steps, rounding and limits. The salary calculator gives a detailed breakdown, while the pay tools help with specific questions such as a pay rise or part-time salary.
Official sources, clear limits
Tax rates and thresholds are checked against authoritative UK sources, including GOV.UK and HMRC. Relevant pages show the tax year and the date those rules were last reviewed, and the methodology links to the sources used.
Pay Unpacked is independent of HMRC. It is an informational calculation tool and does not provide personalised financial or tax advice. An estimate can differ from your payslip because of your circumstances and your employer’s payroll arrangements.
Questions and corrections
If something looks unclear or incorrect, please get in touch. For a question about your own tax code or deductions, check your payslip, employer’s payroll team or HMRC records. Our privacy information explains how calculator inputs and optional analytics are handled.
