How is a bonus taxed in the UK?

A cash bonus is employment income. It is added to your other earnings and can push some income into a higher tax band. Employee National Insurance can also apply, so a bonus is not taxed at one universal rate.

Why might the payslip amount differ?

This tool spreads annual earnings, including the bonus, across 12 notional months for National Insurance. A bonus paid in one month can produce a different NI deduction. The result is an annual comparison, not a prediction of that month’s payslip.

PAYE works through each payroll period. A large one-off bonus can make that month look heavily taxed, while cumulative PAYE may correct some of the difference later. Your tax code, pension, student loan and previous earnings also matter.
